Becoming a foster parent is a noble and rewarding journey. The need for loving and supportive foster homes is crucial, and individuals who have previously served as foster parents or those exploring the path for the first time can greatly benefit from specialized training and resources.

Palmer Home’s goal is to provide both first-time and experienced foster parents seeking foster care opportunities the support and training they need to thrive as foster parents in Mississippi.

The Importance of Ongoing Training for Experienced Foster Parents

Even seasoned foster parents can benefit from ongoing training to enhance their skills and adapt to the evolving needs of the children in their care. Palmer Home is dedicated to providing continuous learning and training to highlight the positive impact houseparents and foster parents can have on the foster parent-child relationship.

Through training provided during the onboarding process as well as regular education provided through our Whole Child Initiative, Palmer Home provides educational training and resources designed to help foster parents learn complex topics such as:

  • how to navigate stewarding children with trauma
  • how to communicate with young minds that are learning how to regulate emotions
  • how to respond with kindness, grace, and patience in times of anxiety or stress

In addition to providing this training to our team and to new houseparents and foster parents, Palmer Home also offers Whole Child Initiative training to other organizations and groups interested in learning more about trauma-informed practices and trauma-responsive care.

Palmer Home as a Hub for Foster Parent Resources

Our organization operates on the belief that every child deserves a stable, loving home where they can thrive educationally, emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. These processes don’t happen without effort. Our commitment to supporting foster families by providing trauma-informed training and resources is a cornerstone of our mission.

Palmer Home is committed to offering a comprehensive range of support services to foster families. This includes not only providing homes for children in need but also ensuring that foster parents receive the necessary training, resources, and assistance to navigate the challenges of foster parenting effectively. We do so in a number of ways:

Training & Orientation for First-Time Foster Parents: Palmer Home understands that the journey to becoming a foster parent can be daunting for newcomers. To address this, the organization provides Whole Child orientation training specifically tailored for first-time foster parents. These orientations cover essential topics, ensuring that new foster parents feel prepared and supported as they embark on their fostering journey.

  • Comprehensive Support Services: From a network of supportive staff who provide tutoring and academic support, to team members dedicated to ensuring children are transported to appointments, to school, to counseling sessions, and other engagements, foster parents on our campus can focus on providing a safe, supportive environment for the children in our care to thrive. By facilitating networking opportunities and encouraging connections among foster parents, the organization aims to build a strong, collaborative network where individuals can share experiences, seek advice, and find encouragement.
  • Community Building: Palmer Home’s campus is home to numerous cottages and a state-of-the-art wellness center located on 154 serene acres to actively promote the creation of a neighborhood feel and a supportive community. In addition to being connected to other foster parents, resources, and a full-time staff member who provides regular respite care, foster parents have a number of resources at Palmer Home.

By prioritizing the well-being of both children and foster parents, Palmer Home strives to create an environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive and build a brighter future.
