Breaking the Cycle

At Palmer Home for Children, we provide support for children in need of hope and healing, and one of the most impactful ways we connect with these children is by cultivating a community of compassion and empathy for the biological family members of the children we serve. An overwhelming number of the children in our care have been raised by parents who did not receive the adequate resources they needed to thrive. Often, when we receive the call from a parent or caregiver in need of support, they have done everything in their power to provide hope and healing to the children in their care.

Our goal is to provide support for the children we serve while also serving as the hands and feet of Christ to those who love them.

Parenting is a journey filled with many challenges. For parents who have experienced trauma and adversity, these challenges can often feel magnified. Trauma can impact how a parent responds to stress, communicates with their children, and provides emotional support. At Palmer Home for Children, we understand that trauma can affect entire families, and we are committed to breaking the cycle to help families heal and thrive.

How Trauma Affects Parenting

When a parent has experienced trauma—whether in childhood or adulthood—it often shapes how they see the world and how they relate to others, including their children. Trauma can lead to:

  • Emotional Dysregulation: A parent who has experienced trauma may struggle with managing emotions, leading to heightened reactions in stressful situations. This can affect how they discipline their children or handle conflicts.
  • Disregulated Attachment Styles: Traumatic experiences, especially in childhood, can affect a parent’s ability to form healthy attachments with their own children, potentially causing emotional distance or over-dependence.
  • Transgenerational Trauma: Without intervention, trauma can be passed down from generation to generation. Children of parents who have experienced trauma and adversity themselves may internalize their parent’s pain, leading to emotional and behavioral issues of their own.

Palmer Home seeks to provide tangible resources to families in need of hope. Our Family Care program provides resources to parents who are overcoming trauma, offering a supportive environment to foster healing and growth. By addressing trauma directly, we work to break the cycle and help families build a healthier future. Our approach includes:

  1. Clinical Support: We offer individual and family therapy to help parents process their trauma, build emotional resilience, and improve their relationships with their children.
  2. Trauma-Informed Education & Support: Learning effective, compassionate parenting techniques can transform a family’s dynamics. We provide parenting workshops focused on trauma-informed care to help parents better understand their children’s needs and their own emotional triggers.
  3. Community Connection: Building a support system is essential. We help parents connect with other families, foster healthy friendships, and build trust in the community around them. Often when the women served through our Family Care program are reunited with their children, we also work to help them find stable housing and employment. Loving mom well in turn allows her to provide more confidently and capably for the children in her care.

At Palmer Home for Children, we believe that every family has the potential for healing and restoration. By focusing on trauma recovery, we’re helping parents not only break the cycle but also create a new path filled with love, understanding, and hope for future generations. In our Family Care Program, we’ve seen countless examples of parents who, with the right support, have broken the cycle of trauma. Read one such story at the link below.

The Role of Community in Healing from Trauma

Trauma can make the world feel like a lonely place. Many children and families who come to Palmer Home for Children have experienced deep pain, loss, or instability. While trauma may leave scars, healing is possible—and one of the most powerful tools in the healing process is community.

Why Community Matters

When someone has experienced trauma, they often feel isolated and misunderstood. The effects of trauma can include anxiety, trust issues, and difficulty forming meaningful relationships. A supportive community, however, can provide:

  • Safety and Stability: Trauma often comes from unpredictable or unsafe environments. A stable community offers a sense of security, allowing individuals to begin the process of healing.
  • Emotional Support: Being surrounded by people who care can make a world of difference. Communities offer a space where individuals can share their struggles, celebrate small victories, and know they aren’t alone.
  • Validation and Understanding: Trauma can lead to feelings of shame or guilt. A community that understands trauma offers validation, reminding individuals that their feelings are real and that healing is possible.

Building a Trauma-Informed Community

At Palmer Home for Children, we emphasize the role of community in trauma recovery. Whether it’s through our residential care program or our Family Care Program, we create an environment where children and families can experience love, stability, and a sense of belonging.

Within our programs, children and parents interact with others who have gone through similar experiences. Knowing they aren’t alone in their trauma helps reduce feelings of isolation. Our staff is trained in trauma-informed care, offering personalized support to each family.

We work alongside families, helping them navigate the challenges of trauma and embrace their path to healing. As a Christian organization, we believe that faith can be a cornerstone of recovery. Our faith-based approach nurtures not just the emotional and physical well-being of children and families, but also their spiritual growth. Being part of a faith community can provide hope, purpose, and peace in the midst of healing.

We have seen the incredible difference a community can make in the lives of children and families. One family, after struggling with years of instability due to trauma, found a new sense of purpose through our service lines. Surrounded by supportive families and staff, they slowly rebuilt trust, repaired relationships, and grew stronger together. By providing a nurturing, faith-filled community, Palmer Home offers children and families a chance to heal from trauma and build a brighter future.

Trauma Recovery: Stories of Hope and Healing

Trauma has the power to break hearts, fracture families, and rob people of hope. We believe in the power of healing and the possibility of transformation. Through our trauma-informed programs, we’ve witnessed countless stories of resilience and recovery—proof that hope can flourish even in the darkest places.

One of the teens who recently entered our Transitional Care program had grown up in an environment of  instability. Trusting adults was difficult, and forming relationships felt impossible. Without our support, he would not have had stable housing, and it’s possible he would not have been able to graduate on time. Today, he has not only graduated from high school and is attending college, but he’s also confident, kind, and self-aware. Providing a support net for him not only provided for his physical needs, but his emotional and spiritual needs as well. Today, he can enjoy meaningful friendships and look forward to a future of hope without fear.

Healing Together: A Family’s Transformation

For another child in our care, early trauma had shattered their sense of self-worth. They struggled with trust and anger, unable to connect with others. Through one-on-one counseling and being surrounded by a compassionate community, this child began to rediscover their identity. They learned that they are worthy of love and care, and that their past doesn’t define their future. Today, they are flourishing—confident, compassionate, and excited for what’s ahead.

We witness the power of healing every day. Each story is a reminder that trauma doesn’t have to be the end of the story. With the right support, care, and faith, children and families can recover, grow, and thrive. We are honored to be a part of their journey and to continue offering hope and healing to those who need it most.
